Flooding shelters closed in Blount & Sevier Counties Friday afternoon

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — UPDATE 1 P.M. FRIDAY: The American Red Cross announced that its shelters were closed by 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. Teams continue to respond to storm damage and flooding throughout Eastern and Middle Tennessee, distributing emergency supplies and completing client casework.

Sevier County Emergency Management Agency also closed its shelter at the Pigeon Forge Community Center at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Shelters are opening in some East Tennessee counties to help people who are displaced by flooding.

Blount County

The Red Cross is opening a shelter at Heritage High School. Shelter, cots, snacks & other supplies are being delivered and will be open until needed. 

Blount Co. officials said Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church is also opening a shelter in Townsend for any residents, especially in the Townsend area, who are being displaced by the flood conditions.

Sevier County

The City of Gatlinburg opened an emergency shelter at the Gatlinburg Community Center at 10 a.m. but served no one. It is now closed.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Pigeon Forge Community Center, 170 Community Center Drive, Pigeon Forge.

The Red Cros said in a release that Disaster Assesment Teams will travel through impacted communities in Middle and East Tennessee when it is safe and more shelters are on standby.
