KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — You've probably heard of TLC's show Say Yes to the Dress. A piece of the hit show is coming to Knoxville. More than 200 students will ‘Say Yes to the Prom.’
High School seniors from Austin-East, Carter, South-Doyle, and West High Schools will shop around for the perfect dress, tux, and accessories for free.
It's a full day of glitz and glamour. For the last nine years, this event is a fan favorite for students and their families.
There are more than 2000 Macy's dresses to chose from. Men's Warehouse is supplying the tuxedo rentals. Stylists will also demonstrate hair and makeup tips during one-on-one "Look and Learn" sessions.
“This is about feeling great knowing you can do it, even if you come from an economic situation that doesn’t give you an opportunity, here is an opportunity for you to see that it is available to you if you seek it out,” said Adria Alpert Romm, Chief People and Culture Officer at Discovery.
Organizers want to help get students ready for the big day, but they also want to inspire them to start thinking about life after graduation.
“This is not only about having this experience and self-confidence. This is also about giving the students a chance to learn more about our industry for their own careers and to get them the help to do that,” said Romm.
It's also a networking opportunity. Representatives with Discovery, the Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation, and the Emma Bowen Foundation will talk to students about scholarships, internships and give them a chance to meet people in other industries.
This year, Discovery, Macy's and Becca's Closet are partnering to offer Spirit of Community Scholarship to 20 deserving high school students across the United States. Each student will be awarded $5,000 to help subsidize their upcoming tuition in the fall semester of 2020.
Applications must be mailed to Becca’s Closet by April 1, 2020. Students must be a graduating high school senior to apply.
