East Tennessee did see flooding during record rains in February, but it could have been much worse.
The Tennessee Valley Authority said Thursday that it was able to prevent what could have been a billion dollars worth of damage from high water.
TVA shared a graphic on its Twitter account showing how much damage was averted in specific cities, including $772 million in Chattanooga, $110 million in Clinton, and $65.4 million in Lenoir City.
"Some areas are still recovering, but the flooding would've been much worse without our series of dams and the engineers and highly trained employees that operate the river system," TVA wrote.
TVA manages 29 power-generating dams throughout the Tennessee River system that enable them to store and control the flow of water.
