BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — McGhee Tyson Airport has seen just a few cancellations ahead of Hurricane Helene's landfall.
Becky Huckaby, a spokesperson for the airport, said only flights to Florida have been affected as of Thursday evening. No other flights have been affected because of the weather in Knoxville.
“We know that Tampa airport as well as Clearwater airport are being impacted potentially by the hurricane coming through, and so they’ve already closed for the day,” Huckaby said.
She is encouraging folks to check their airline's app if they plan to travel throughout the weekend.
“If you’re going to be flying over the next 24 to 48 hours as the storm moves through, not just through Florida but throughout the southeast, you want to make sure that you’re downloading the app of the airline that you’re traveling with," Huckaby said. "That way you have instantaneous information about the status of your flight.”
No matter where travelers are going, they should keep an eye out for delays and cancellations, she said.
“You also want to be looking at the connecting airport that you’re flying through, as well as your final destination," Huckaby said. "You might not think about it, but your flight to California could definitely be impacted by something if you’re connecting through Atlanta or even Dallas, depending on where the hurricane actually makes land.”
