'We're out $10,000' | Travel plans and pocketbooks impacted in East Tennessee after global tech outage hits airlines

McGhee Tyson Airport says around a third of flights Friday were affected.

ALCOA, Tenn. — A global tech outage affected millions worldwide, and for travelers at McGhee Tyson Airport in East Tennessee -- it was no different.

Spokesperson for the airport Becky Huckaby said around a third of flights were impacted during the outage.

Kelly Smith, a Knox County mom, shared her disappointment after a planned deep-sea fishing trip was canceled following a delayed Allegiant flight to Destin.

"It's been a really stressful day," Smith said. "We're out $10,000 and I don't know if I'll get that money back. I work too hard to let that kind of money go."

A Georgia family in McGhee Tyson Airport said their flight from Savannah to Denver was canceled.

"I stayed up all night, hitting the refresh button from Frontier," Alicia Anderson said.

Andersen said she weighed her options and decided to take the direct flight from Knoxville to Denver. She and her family drove 9 hours from Savannah to Knoxville.

"Definitely some unexpected expenses," she said. "My parents are having their 50th wedding anniversary."
