The Olympic Diving Trials in Knoxville have wrapped up. Here are the divers that made it to Team USA

One diver made history in Knoxville on Sunday by securing a spot on the team in both the platform and springboard events for the first time in more than 20 years.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 2024 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials are winding down in Knoxville.

The trials began Monday at the University of Tennessee's Aquatics Center. On Sunday, athletes competed for a spot on Team USA in the men's 3-meter springboard final and women's 10-meter platform final.

On Sunday, Andrew Capobianco qualified for the team by placing first in the men's individual 3-meter springboard final with a score of 971.80.

Carson Tyler also made history Sunday by coming in second with a score of 945.75, which means the 20-year-old Indiana diver will be just the second U.S. male diver to ever compete in both the platform and springboard diving events in the Olympics.

WBIR 10News caught up with Capobianco before the trials. This will be his second trip to the Olympics after he earned a silver medal in the Tokyo Games.

On top of competing for a spot in the Olympics, Capobianco worked to mentor the next generation of divers while practicing.

"It's just been really great. If I have a hard practice, I go and I coach these seven and eight-year-olds and they have these smiles on their faces. It's just having fun with the sport, and it kind of reminds you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place," he said.

On Sunday, Delaney Schnell secured her spot on Team USA in the individual women's platform.

On Saturday, Sarah Bacon and Alison Gibson secured their spots on Team USA in the individual women's 3-meter springboard, and Carson Tyler earned his first spot on the Olympics team in the men's 10-meter platform dive.

Bacon totaled 639.00 points on the springboard to add a second Olympics event. She had previously secured a spot in synchronized 3-meter with Kassidy Cook.

Gibson was runner-up with 635.10 to qualify for her second Olympics. She competed in synchronized 3-meter at the Tokyo Games.

On June 27, Team USA named one last diver to the team: Daryn Wright. The Purdue diver placed second in the women's 10-meter platform dive on Sunday and had reached Olympic qualification requirements, but the team only had one guaranteed spot for the event based on its performance in the World Aquatics Championships in Doha.

Only 136 divers from across the world can compete in the Olympic Games. In Wright's case, one of the quota spots was reallocated to Team USA.

“It has been a long four days, but thankfully it came out on top with the good news. I’m pretty much just shocked right now to say the least. I’m very, very excited and emotional, but very shocked,” Wright said. “It was hard because I didn’t necessarily know the odds, if they were good or not, just because it had taken so long to see if we had the second spot. My mind was racing in probably every possible direction, but I’m glad today was good.”
