KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee was named the top school for sports fans in a recent poll from USA TODAY.
USA TODAY asked an expert panel to nominate the top contenders and its readers voted on the best college experiences for sports fans.
The university was named the number one school, topping schools like Ole Miss, University of Connecticut, University of Wisconsin and University of Michigan.
USA TODAY wrote, "Tailgating culture at UT, which is pretty legendary, goes beyond the stadium's parking lots and Circle Park; the self-proclaimed "Vol Navy" pulls up to the stadium via the Tennessee River for a 'sailgating' session before each game."
The newspaper also boasted about Neyland Stadium being one of the largest college football stadiums in the country - fitting more than 100,000 fans.
The University of Tennessee is ranked No. 7 in the AP polls as of Tuesday.
Six teams now sit in front of UT in the rankings. Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, Ohio State, Miami (Florida) and Texas take the lead in that order, with Oregon holding the number one spot.
Tennessee was on a bye week this week and will return to the field on Nov. 2 to battle Kentucky at home. The Vols' eighth game of the season will take place in Neyland Stadium and will be televised by the SEC Network, with kickoff starting at 7:45 p.m.
