'Travel in Western NC should be for emergencies only' | NCDOT: I-26 closed at TN state line, I-40 remains impassable in multiple spots

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is reporting hundreds of road issues after Helene brought devastating flooding.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina Department of Transportation said there are still hundreds of roadway and travel issues in western North Carolina on Monday morning.

NCDOT is asking the public to stay out of the area and that I-40 is impassable in multiple locations and I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line.

"All roads in western North Carolina should be considered closed and non-emergency travel is prohibited," NCDOT said.

The agency said many closed roads aren't listed on their site as many areas are not able to report traffic conditions. As of Monday morning, over 460,00 in North Carolina remain without power.

In Tennessee, TDOT said 27 state roadways are closed.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency asked the public to not send donations that haven't been requested by state or local authorities. The agency said it's not accepting these donations until the life safety mission is complete.

TEMA said Tennesseans self-deploying to disaster areas will hinder response and recovery efforts.
