KPD releases bodycam video showing officers fatally shooting 25-year-old

Two Knoxville Police Department officers shot and killed Jamauri D. Griffin after he shot a woman in the face, bodycam video shows.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Editor's Note: The raw bodycam footage is graphic and shows the moment a woman is shot in the face and the moment officers shoot and kill Jamauri D. Griffin. Viewer discretion is advised.

The Knoxville Police Department has released bodycam video that shows the moments officers fatally shot a 25-year-old.

Jamauri D. Griffin was shot by the officers during a domestic disturbance at a house in the 4700 block of Santala Drive just before 7:50 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, the Knoxville Police Department said.

In the video, you can see KPD Officers Hunter Powers and Cayden Riddle arrive at the home in response to a domestic disturbance and hear the female victim, Winter Basurto, in distress. The officers then enter the home.

Almost immediately after entering the house and announcing who they are, Griffin shoots Basurto in the face. The officers immediately open fire on Griffin and kill him.

After the shooting, you can hear the officers immediately call for backup and move over to Basurto to help her. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment, according to KPD.

Records show that KPD responded to the same address Feb. 7 regarding a domestic disturbance. During that incident, Griffin fired a gun multiple times at Basurto's rear driver's side tires while she tried to get away from him after he became agitated.

In the February incident, records state Griffin was at the home when Basurto arrived. He had flowers, a warrant states, and he wanted to get back with her.

Basurto told police she didn't want to get back with him and he became "agitated and destroyed the flowers." When she tried to leave, he fired gunshots, according to the warrant.

Griffin was charged with reckless endangerment and vandalism after Basurto reported the incident to the police. He was scheduled to appear in court in May, according to records.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. KPD's Office of Professional Standards is also conducting an internal administrative investigation. Both of the investigations remain ongoing while Powers and Riddle remain on routine administrative leave, according to KPD.
