KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The AAA estimated that around a third of Americans were planning to travel over Labor Day this year. Most of them planned to drive. If they needed to fill up on gasoline, they may spend much more than they did around last year's Labor Day.
In Tennessee, the average price of regular gasoline was around $2.91 per gallon last year. Now, it is around $3.37 per gallon. Even though the price is still much higher than last year, the price of gasoline has been trending down for several weeks across the U.S.
Prices were higher in East Tennessee on average, compared to the rest of the state. A gallon of gasoline cost around $3.46 per gallon in Knox County. The average price of gasoline in Knoxville was around three cents cheaper than in the surrounding county, according to AAA.
But last year on Labor Day, gasoline cost around $2.86 per gallon in Knoxville.
While the price of gasoline is still higher than normal in Tennessee, it is still under the national average. In the U.S. the price of gasoline is around $3.79 per gallon. Last year, it was around $3.19 per gallon.
