KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Labor Day weekend is here — when people are expected to flock to the homes of friends and families to enjoy barbecues and relax on their days off from work.
AAA said around 32% of Americans are expected to travel over the weekend. They said around 82% of those travelers will be driving instead of flying or going by train.
According to AAA's survey, around 73% of people also plan to take a leisure trip after Labor Day, extending their vacation into the week. Around half of the people polled planned to take a road trip.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation will be pausing lane closures across the state for the Labor Day holiday weekend, making it easier for drivers to get to their destinations without hitting traffic.
Since traffic is expected to be busy for the holiday, TDOT said construction crews will stop all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways starting at noon on Friday until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The Knoxville Police Department also said they will step up enforcement through the weekend, staying vigilant for reckless, distracted and impaired driving.
