CLINTON, Tenn. — The Clinton City Special Olympics Blaze team includes about a dozen students from North and South Clinton Elementary Schools.
Mindy Wilson leads a Comprehensive Development Class as part of the special education staff at North Clinton Elementary School. She organized an outdoor training session at the track next to the South Clinton Inclusive Playground.
"It's an opportunity for them to go and shine their light and be one of the few Olympians that get to go and show their skills," she said.
Mindy is also a CrossFit Coach. She recruited one of her friends who is also CrossFit Coach to help.
"We are there to support our athletes and keep them busy, keep them functional in life in general," Clinch Valley CrossFit Coach Melinda Spiva said.
The students practices the long jump, softball throw, and running. They laughed the whole time.
"We like to win but no it doesn't. It's all about the whole purpose of coming together and celebrating the kids," Mindy said.
Melinda said, "It's all about having fun."
The track and field events are at Hardin Valley Academy April 16.
"We're going to have a pancake breakfast and raise some money for us to pay for the bus and buy some t-shirts and we're now the Clinton City Blaze Special Olympics Team. So we're super excited about it," Mindy said.
