Winter weather bringing frigid temps to East TN, knocking out power and causing some hazardous road conditions

Late Thursday night, a blast of arctic air hit East Tennessee. It could freeze roads and plummet temperatures into the teens.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A blast of arctic air hit East Tennessee late Thursday night and was expected to continue into Friday morning, bringing temperatures down to the teens and potentially freezing some roads.

The winter weather could also bring gusts of wind that could reach up to 40 mph, creating wind chills that could reach -20 degrees in some parts of East Tennessee. The National Weather Service also said most of East Tennessee would be under a Wind Chill Warning from 4 a.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday.

Only northwest counties of East Tennessee experienced snow, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Other counties monitored a wintry mix and applied salt to keep roads from flash freezing.
