KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — ***A Flash Flood Warning was issued for parts of Green County, Cocke County, Jefferson County, Hamblen County, Hawkins County and Sevier County until around 10 p.m. EDT.
The Sevier County Emergency Management Agency is asking people to exercise caution after several roads flooded, including Waldens Creek Road.
Previously, a Flash Flood Warning was issued for Greene and Cocke counties until 7 p.m. EDT. The Greeneville Police Department said several roads in the area were experiencing "significant" flooding and becoming impassable, particularly on the eastern side of the county in Tusculum.
Please turn around, don't drown. Do not drive across water-covered or flooded roads. The National Weather Service said most flood deaths occur in vehicles.***
Multiple rounds of thunderstorms swept through East Tennessee on Wednesday, thanks to a cold front that will transition to a stationary front. Gusty winds and localized heavy rainfall were possible.
There is a level 1 marginal risk from the Storm Prediction Center in place for areas to the east of I-75 on Wednesday. A Flood Watch is also in place for most of East Tennessee until Thursday morning.
During storms, people should remember never to drive through puddles. There's no way to tell how deep they are, and driving through a flooded area can damage cars and trap people inside. Whenever anyone hears thunder, they should also head indoors.
When will the weather impact me the most?
There will be multiple rounds of thunderstorms throughout the day on Wednesday. We are also expecting more heavy rain and gusty winds from the remnants of Helene to arrive Thursday and Friday.
How can the weather impact me?
Heavy rain can cause flooding, block roads and potentially damage homes. People should take precautions in case of flooding, such as staying vigilant in areas prone to floods. Anyone on the road when storms roll in should also make sure not to drive through large puddles.
Often, puddles can be deeper than they appear and trying to drive through them can damage cars and trap people inside them. Avoid puddles while on the road. If there's thunder, people should also take shelter inside a sturdy building.
