Below are instructions for a few of the activities and crafts we will be doing.

Rainbow Coffee Filter

Supplies: Markers, Coffee filter, Spray bottle filled with water, Paper of any color for your cloud, Stapler, Googly eyes with sticky back

  • Start by drawing a cloud that is about the width of the paper (8-10 inches).
  • Cut out the cloud.
  • Fold the coffee filter in half.
  • Choose a marker and loosely color the edge of the coffee filter on one side.
  • Switch marker colors and repeat this process, filling in the coffee filter with color until you have colored the entire semi-circle.
  • Holding the spray bottle about 6 inches away, spray the colored side of the coffee filter about 3 times.
  • You will notice the marker start to spread across the filter and into the other colors.
  • Let the coffee filter dry.
  • While the coffee filter is drying, draw a face on the cloud you previously cut out. Peel the sticker off the googly eyes and place on the cloud. Note: You do not need googly eyes and can draw them on the cloud instead.
  • Once the coffee filter is dry, place your cloud on top of the coffee filter, still keeping it folded in half. Overlap the bottom of the filter with the cloud by about 1 inch. Use a stapler or glue to stick the cloud to the rainbow filter.
  • Experiment with different patterns.

Leaf Rubbing Art

Supplies: Crayons that have the paper peeled off, White paper, and Green or somewhat soft leaves

  • Find some leaves that won’t break apart when you squeeze them. Look for ones that are different shapes to play with patterns.
  • Place leaves on your workspace with the veins of the leaves facing up. Put the paper on top of the leaves.
  • Use your non-dominant hand, hold the paper in place.
  • Pick a crayon and lay it on its side on top of the paper.
  • Rub the crayon back and forth over part of the paper while holding the paper in place. You will notice the pattern of the leaves start to emerge.
  • Switch crayon colors and repeat step 5 until you have filled the paper with color.
  • You can experiment with other art mediums by brushing watercolor over your leaf rubbing for an added layer of color.

DIY Thermometer

Supplies: Glass container, modeling clay, water, rubbing alcohol, food coloring, and a straw

  • Start with your glass container (or sturdy plastic) and fill it with water ¼ the way.
  • Then pour rubbing alcohol in the container, until the container is half full of liquid.
  • Choose a color of food dye and place 1-2 drops into the liquid.
  • Put your straw in the container. Make sure the straw is not touching the bottom of the jar but make sure it’s in the liquid.
  • Using the modeling clay (or play-doh), form it around the straw at the opening of the container filling any gaps between the jar and the straw.
  • Set your project in the sun or hold it in your hands to watch the change of the liquid in the straw.
  • Does the liquid go up or down in the straw? What would happen to the liquid in the straw if you placed it in a bowl of ice water?
