Governor Lee requests federal disaster relief for counties impacted by tornadoes

According to TEMA, 10 counties in Tennessee were impacted by tornadoes and severe storms on the night of March 31. 15 people died including nine in McNairy County.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Governor Bill Lee requested federal emergency assistance for 10 counties impacted by tornadoes and severe weather on March 31 and April 1.

Gov. Lee made an emergency declaration for Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Lewis, Macon, McNairy, Rutherford, Tipton, and Wayne counties for debris removal and emergency protective measures during the tornado and severe weather response.

If that request is granted, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will also provide direct aid to eligible Tennessee residents in the requested counties for disaster-related costs and expenses.

On Friday night, March 31, tornadoes and severe storms hit Tennessee, damaging and destroying homes, causing debris and power outages.

According to Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, 15 Tennesseans died from those storms, including nine in McNairy County.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has made recovery resources available for impacted Tennesseans to find key resources and support. The State Emergency Operations Center in Nashville remains activated in support of the ongoing tornado and severe weather response.
