COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — As storms swept through East Tennessee bringing heavy rain and strong winds on Friday, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Putnam County.
WSMV, a sister station in Nashville, said that the tornado touched down for a brief period of time and was around 75 yards wide.
Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton shared pictures of damage across the city.
The pictures showed buildings with paneling torn off the outside and exposed beams. Trees were down along roads in the South Willow, Neal Street, Dry valley and Brotherton areas. The pictures also showed a building with a portion of its roof torn off.
A tornado warning was also issued for Fentress, Putnam and Overton counties Friday. It expired by 1:45 p.m. that afternoon, with Monterey and Crawford in warning's range.
A severe thunderstorm was also issued for several East Tennessee counties including Knox, Grainger, Jefferson, Hawkins, Hamblen and Union counties.
The Putnam County Emergency Management Agency said there were no injuries or destroyed structures reported as of 5:20 p.m.
