ERWIN, Tenn. — Freight transportation company CSX hosted the "Holiday Express" event in Erwin on Thursday night.
The free community event offered free food and entertainment. Free gift bags were offered to any child in attendance.
While holiday season spirit was the theme, the ongoing recovery efforts in the aftermath of Helene were the topics of discussion.
CSX revealed $5,000 donations to a group of five regional non-profits that have provided food, shelter and other assistance to East Tennessee and western North Carolina since Helene hit in late September.
More than 100 people bundled up and embraced the frosty, snow-filled night to celebrate with Santa himself and Americana singer and Tennessee native Drew Holcomb.
Dawn Trivette of Kingsport said the night hit all of its marks.
"It helps the kids. It gives them something to look forward to and it’s been very nice. It’s been great," Trivette said.
Brian Tucker, CSX's vice president for stakeholder engagement and sustainability, agreed.
"We've been a part of this community for over 100 years, and we love this community and we're proud to be a part of it," Tucker said.
