Sevier County volunteer group helping provide shelter for East Tennesse and Western North Carolina communities displaced by Helene

"Mountain Strong Sanctuary" was created a month ago after individual volunteers decided to combine their efforts.

HOT SPRINGS, N.C. — In just a month, the new non-profit organization, "Mountain Strong Sanctuary" has already helped 40 families displaced by Helene. They started by delivering essentials to those in need and have expanded their efforts to clear land for temporary and permanent housing.

Stefan Fox, one of the founders, said he saw gaps in relief efforts and decided he wanted to help.

"The further we started getting involved, the more of a need we started to see. We just couldn't sit back and watch. A lot of these families have not received the support they need," Fox said.

He and a few other individual volunteers decided to join together to make a greater impact and help more people. One is Daniel Ertel, a former servicemember.

"I realized after this hurricane that not much was happening. We have to take care of our own. So, I just jumped the gun and started doing it myself, helping where I could," Ertel said.

Already they set up a campground in Waynesville, NC in about 10 days. Now, they've moved onto a property in Hot Springs where families are already waiting to stay.

"About three or four families are waiting for us to lay the gravel and set up some temporary plots for campers. We'll be providing permanent housing up the mountain in more of a phase two or three type deal. But, we are working as fast as possible," Fox said.

As temperatures continue to drop, they're ramping up their efforts to ensure no Helene victims are without a warm place to stay.

"We've had people all over the country donate funds and supplies. Even that little part makes our part possible. Every little bit helps," Ertel said.

They estimate the Hot Springs property will be ready in about three to four days with more permanent housing taking a few months. They are continuing to work not only to clear land but also to deliver campers, fire trucks, and other necessities.

They also share ways to get involved in their efforts and others on their Facebook page.
