North Carolina church comes together to help community members in need

"I couldn’t get out of my house. All the doors and windows were cracked or jammed. It just twisted my house like it was a beer can."

FAIRVIEW, N.C. — Comfort food makes all the difference.

David Traynor cooks every day at the Nesbitts Chapel Church.

Traynor lost everything in Helene's flooding. "I couldn’t get out of my house. All the doors and windows were cracked or jammed. It just twisted my house like it was a beer can."

His focus now? Acts of service.

"These people, David [Traynor] especially, literally saved my life because I don’t know what I would have done because I didn’t even know about this chapel, and they have helped me and saved me and I am humbled by these people," one woman said.

The church organized an effort to help with clothing, food and necessities—all available for the taking. "I have seen things that will haunt me for the rest of my life," the woman said.

Wally Graeber came down from the Highlands and couldn’t get back. "There's such a need down here. It's tough."

Graeber doesn't know when he'll be able to return home—and he's okay with that.

"It's tough to watch people lose their whole family but it's also beautiful to watch people come together," Graeber said.
