Few households in TN have insurance covering weather-related floods, data shows

According to FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program, fewer than 1% of most counties have flood coverage.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A large number of people in East Tennessee have to rebuild their lives following damage caused by Hurricane Helene. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with census data, an incredibly low number of Tennesseans have insurance covering weather-related flooding for their homes in heavily impacted counties.

Data showing the number of total households with this insurance for some of the most impacted counties is available below. 

  • Carter County -  0.79% of all households (223 out of 28,299) 
  • Cocke County -  0.81% of all households (145 out of 17.998)
  • Greene County - 0.30% of all households (99 out of 32,909) 
  • Hamblen County - 0.25% of all households (70 out of 28,474)
  • Jefferson County - 0.35% of all households. (91 out of 26,048) 
  • Sevier County - 1.91% of all households (1,151 out of 60,296)
  • Unicoi County - 1.45% of all households (127 out of 8,777)
  • Washington County - 0.43% of all households (267 out of 62,741)  

For data on the rest of Tennessee's counties, you can visit the National Flood Insurance Program's website. The program said it provides around $1.3 trillion in coverage from flooding.
