Want to help people in Cocke County after Helene? Join WBIR on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6 to help sort and distribute donations

WBIR 10News is looking for volunteers in the community to join us in Cocke County on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6 to help sort and distribute donations.

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. — In late September, Hurricane Helene left many parts of East Tennessee flooded and destroyed. As a result, it left thousands homeless and in need of basic necessities: food, water, and shelter.

WBIR 10News is looking for volunteers in the community to join us in Cocke County on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6 to help sort and distribute donations for those who are in need right now.

Here's how you can help:

  • Location: We will be at the distribution warehouse in Cocke County located at 1190 Old Asheville Highway, Newport, TN 37821
  • Dates: Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Wednesday, Nov. 6
  • Shifts: 8 a.m. to noon,  and noon to 4 p.m.
  • Details: We will meet at the warehouse to receive, distribute, and organize donated goods. Please wear pants and closed-toe shoes. WBIR will provide you with a volunteer shirt when you arrive.

If you or a group are interested in helping during times not listed above, you can sign up at this link on the Volunteer East Tennessee website.

If you would also like to bring donated items to your volunteer shift, the following items are currently needed:

  • Masks
  • Protective eyewear
  • Work gloves
  • Flat Shovels
  • Pry Bars
  • Lumber
  • Plywood

Currently, Cocke Couty's biggest need is tradesmen, so if you know skilled people who can help with various construction and technical trades -- please spread the word and contact the Volunteer Reception Center located at Wonderfully Made Coffee & More at (423) 930-6052.
