Gatlinburg says it's not issuing any burn permits until dry conditions improve

Drought conditions continued to worsen in East Tennessee due to low humidity and lack of rain. The city wants people to stay mindful to keep the fire risk down.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — The city of Gatlinburg is asking people to be careful and not to burn outdoors as dry conditions continue to worsen across the area.

The city's fire department is not issuing any burn permits until conditions improve. Sevier County and most of East Tennessee are currently experiencing abnormally dry, moderate or severe drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

“The Fire Department asks that everyone be mindful of the recent dry conditions and low humidity and take proper steps on keeping fire danger at a low risk,” said Charlie Cole, Gatlinburg's Fire Chief.

The city said it requires burn permits year-round for any outdoor burning. You can call the Gatlinburg Fire Department at (865) 436-5112 for more information.
