Blount County prepares for potential flooding as heavy rain continues into Thursday

The Blount County Emergency Management Agency and local business owners are keeping a close eye on the forecast, preparing for flooding.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — With rain pouring down across the region, the Blount County Emergency Management Agency is preparing for potential flooding. Lance Coleman, the agency's director, said the community is prepared for rain to continue through the rest of the week.

"We're looking at a lot of rain here for the next two days," he said. "Our priorities are life preservation, stabilizing the situation, and protecting property in any emergency we might face."

Business owners in Townsend are closely monitoring the weather and water levels in Little River, staying prepared in case they rise too high.

"This storm is bringing a lot of rain, and with the mountains, flash flooding can happen quickly," said David Black, general manager of Townsend Abbey and The Little River Campground.

Lodges and campgrounds, particularly those near the river, are at greater risk for floods.

"Flooding is tough. Anyone on a dirt road is going to be in bad shape, but we handle it the best we can and help our customers." said Nicole Jopling, owner of a Townsend lodging establishment.

Though no evacuations have been necessary so far, local businesses are bracing for the possibility.

"We've probably got about 5 feet of rise left before we need to get serious about evacuating," said Black. "If we see another 3 feet of rise, we'll start making preparations."

Coleman urged Blount County residents to stay informed and be ready for the worst.

"Be aware of your surroundings, have a go-bag ready, and this is probably a good time to stay home and stay safe," said Coleman.

As rain continues to fall, residents are encouraged to heed the weather warnings and stay prepared.
