How Anderson County is preparing for incoming winter weather

With the potential for snow in the forecast, the county is preparing for an increase in emergencies and 911 calls.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Anderson County EMA Director Brice Kidwell said they are keeping a close eye on the weather ahead.

"Like any type of weather event, the call volume goes up," Kidwell said. "Of course, during winter weather, you know, you have people that get out and about that run off the road."

He added that at first, they expected to deal with the low temperatures, however, now they are also prepared for the potential of snow.

One of their biggest concerns is the ability to keep their roads clear for the public and for any emergency vehicles that might need to use them.

"One of the main things that our county department and state department are worried about is giving our emergency services to calls that are needed, 911 emergencies," Kidwell said. "So keeping those roads as treated as possible as clear as possible will aid in that."

Emergencies can be a consequence of unsafe road conditions and power outages.

"On top of that, have an emergency kit of some sort prepared with food and water, a flashlight, a weather radio, things, make sure your phone's fully charged," he said. "If power outages become a problem, and you're going to run a generator, make sure the generators outside stored with the fuel outside, so that doesn't become a hazard. Have carbon monoxide detectors in your residence."

AAA said people must always drive at a safe speed and leave braking room for the car in front of them. If you get stuck in snow or ice, make sure to straighten the wheel and go slow.

You can also add sand or cat litter under the wheels to avoid spinning.
