Knoxville leaders say long-awaited re-pavement of Woodrow Drive will start this week

Numerous residents on Woodrow Drive have complained that utility construction in 2023 left potholes and uneven pavement, leading to hazardous driving.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Neighbors on Woodrow Drive in Fountain City should see construction crews on their street this week, according to Knoxville leaders.

Eric Vreeland, a city spokesperson, said the re-pavement project will happen in two phases and should wrap up by the end of November.

During the first phase, crews will focus on sections of the road up to 300 feet long for some new foundation, Vreeland said.

The crews should lay a new foundation for one section per day. Woodrow Drive's residents should be able to drive on the new foundation that same day, though driving restrictions will happen during the day, Vreeland said.

During the second phase, road crews will lay two fresh layers of asphalt onto the new foundation. That is also expected to cause some driving restrictions, he said.

Some residents of Woodrow have complained about their road's poor condition for months. Logan Daly said her concerns have ranged from reduced property values to car damage and hazardous driving as folks maneuver around potholes.

Daly said she knows road work takes time, but navigating KUB's project was difficult, and she is concerned about this one.

"We all have 8-to-4, 9-to-5 jobs. So, leaving in the morning and coming home in the afternoons kinda scares me a little bit. I'm scared I'm going to be stranded on one end of Woodrow and not be able to get back to my home," she said.

City leaders have contracted with the Rogers Group to complete the project, according to a press release.
