TDOT unveils new website tracking Alcoa Highway Corridor Project progress

The project includes improvements to a major road connecting Knoxville, Alcoa and Maryville.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Drivers in East Tennessee can follow along as crews make progress on a major project to improve a road that connects Knoxville, Alcoa and Maryville.

Alcoa Highway brings travelers to and from McGhee Tyson Airport, and adventurers take it on their way to the Great Smoky Mountains. Construction began on improvements to the road in July 2023, and the first phase of those improvements is expected to last until 2025.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation unveiled a website on Wednesday offering a timeline of the Alcoa Highway Corridor Project and discussions about the improvements.

They are meant to correct deficiencies in the roadway while modernizing it, upgrade traffic signals, increase access to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and reduce the chance of crashes.

The new website includes a bimonthly newsletter showcasing the progress crews are making while also highlighting different parts of the project. A timeline on the website's homepage also shows where in the project crews currently area.

The second phase is expected to last up to nine months, as is the third phase. Phase four could last up to a year before the Alcoa Highway Corridor Project is complete, according to the website.
