KUB begins work to upgrade water pipes near North Broadway

As crews upgrade the decades-old water pipe, traffic may be impacted on North Broadway.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Drivers on North Broadway in Knoxville may run into some traffic delays in the coming months. The Knoxville Utilities Board is making water and wastewater upgrades between Bluff Avenue and Oglewood Avenue.

KUB said North Broadway is the perfect location for the upgrade because it hasn't been paved in a while.

"This project is being worked on with TDOT and the City of Knoxville because we want to get ahead of their paving schedule. So, we're not messing up freshly paved roads with our constructions," said a spokesperson for KUB.

Work on the water system is expected to wrap up in March. Crews will mostly work in the overnight hours. The wastewater system will require 24-hour workdays from January to June. The project will replace pipes that are more than 90 years old.

"This will reduce main breaks and hopefully create less of a hassle for our customers as we move forward," the spokesperson said.

When hooking up the new pipes, KUB also expects some people to temporarily lose water.

"While that connection is being made, there will be a temporary outage, but we will communicate with those being affected," he said.

KUB is hopeful to stay on time as work continues on the project but said that delays are always possible. They also urge drivers to be cautious of workers and equipment while driving through the area.
