KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The holidays are the busiest travel season of the year. It's when around a third of all Americans will leave home to see family and friends, according to AAA

It can make roads congested and cause traffic to back up across the country.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation wants to make traveling easier for people as they return home after Christmas and prepare for the new year. Between Dec. 20 and 6 a.m. on Jan. 2, TDOT will stop lane closures on interstates and state highways.

“With 2.59 million motorists expected to travel Tennessee roadways during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, keeping traffic moving and getting motorists to their destinations safely is our top priority,” Clay Bright sain in a press release, TDOT Commissioner. “As always, please wear your seatbelt, reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and never drink and drive.”
