KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A section of Bernard Avenue and Elm Street between Marion Street and University Avenue will be closing for about a year beginning Monday, Oct. 28, according to the Knoxville City Council.
The closure will be done to accommodate the Tennessee Department of Transportation as they replace the overhead Interstate 275 bridge. The current bridge was built in 1954 and widened in 1984.
Construction will increase the vertical clearance under the bridge and improve bicycle and pedestrian paths on Bernard Avenue, the Council says. Traffic on Bernard Avenue and Elm Street will be detoured for the next year onto University Avenue, West Fifth Avenue and Marion Street.
