KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Motorists in downtown Knoxville may need to find a different route starting early Friday morning when a portion of Gay Street will be closed to accommodate a large crane.
Over the weekend, until Nov. 21, the 700 and 800 blocks of South Gay Street will be closed between Main Street and Church Avenue. During this time, crews will assemble the mobilize the crane. The closure will affect the Cumberland Avenue intersection, but not the Main Street and Church Street intersection.
Signed detours will be in place, but people will still be able to access businesses in this area, according to a release from officials.
Commuters heading to Neyland Stadium from the Gay Street Bridge or traveling on James White Parkway to Cumberland Avenue will be affected. They will need to find a different route, and officials recommended leaving early enough to navigate detours.
On Nov. 22, the crane will be in place at the 800-block of Gay Street and the 700-block section will reopen. This will reopen the Cumberland Avenue intersection, officials said.
The single-block closure will continue until Dec. 9, and then both blocks will close again the weekend of Dec. 10 as the crane is taken down and disassembled.
The crane will be used for work on the top levels of the First Horizon Bank building, according to officials.
