KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Northbound Alcoa Highway had to be closed in South Knoxville after blasting operations sent large rocks and debris across the roadway.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said northbound traffic was being detoured at John Sevier Highway via Maryville Pike as crews worked to clean up a large amount of debris. Southbound traffic was not affected.

TDOT said the closure was between John Sevier Highway and Cherokee Trail near University of Tennessee Medical Center.

As of noon, northbound traffic was backed up for roughly a mile past Topside Road. As of 12:40 p.m., the roadway was reopened with rolling roadblocks that lasted until 3 p.m.

TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi shared several pictures of the blasting debris.
