Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced Newfound Gap Road closed Wednesday, January 27 at 5 p.m. due to a winter storm warning.
The road will be closed until further notice. The road is a popular route for travelers and visitors in the Great Smoky Mountains. It will be closed between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina.
Some rain was in Wednesday's forecast in East Tennessee, with dropping temperatures in the late afternoon. The dropping temperatures could cause the rain to change into some snow flurries by the evening, officials said.
The most chance for snow was in the higher elevations, officials said. However, lower elevations could also see a dusting. Lows were expected to be in the upper 20s Wednesday night.
