Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park said that Newfound Gap Road will close at 4 p.m. Thursday evening due to snow and ice in the forecast.
The road is a popular route for travelers and visitors in the Great Smoky Mountains. It will be closed between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina. The road was open Thursday afternoon after crews worked to clear it, according to officials.
Officials said that they would notify people online when the road reopens.
East Tennessee had a chance for flurries Thursday morning, with chilly temperatures. Highs were near 40 with lows expected to drop into the mid-20s overnight.
