MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Maryville Police Department said a gas leak brought a section of U.S. 321, otherwise known as East Lamar Alexander Pkwy., down to one lane Wednesday afternoon.

Later, the Maryville City Government said both eastbound lanes of the highway were closed due to the gas leak.

They said the gas leak was located near the intersection of U.S. 321 and South Belmont Dr. They warned drivers of congestion in the area and said they should use alternate routes, if possible.

The Maryville City Government said a company working in the area hit an underground gas line, and Atmos crews were working to repair it. They said both lanes were being routed into a turn lane, resulting in a long backup of traffic.

They also said the lane closure could be in effect for several hours.
