KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Students are returning to class, and so police officers are returning to the streets to keep them safe.
The Knoxville Police Department said they will start enhanced school zone enforcement efforts on Aug 24. Officers will be assigned to 26 elementary schools, seven middle schools and six high schools daily. They will be there before school starts and after classes let out.
While at their assigned schools, officers will work to stop dangerous and careless driving. They will be on the lookout for speeding, distracted driving, reckless driving, violations of school bus laws and right-of-way regulations.
Officials reminded drivers they should not pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians and never pass a school bus if it is stopped to unload or pick up children.
The first day of school in Knox County is scheduled for Aug. 24.
