SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — A man died and several others were hurt in a serious crash on Interstate 40 over the weekend.
According to the Sevierville Police Department, officers responded to a crash on I-40 near Exit 407 late Saturday just before midnight.
According to police, witnesses said they saw a car driving east on I-40 when it hit a guardrail on the left-hand side of the interstate. The car then hit a pick-up truck that was in the center lane before going off the road and rolling over into the center median.
Police said the driver of the car, 21-year-old Julio Bonilla of Washington, D.C., was thrown out of the vehicle and died from his injuries. A LIFESTAR helicopter took the front-seat passenger to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with serious injuries, and an ambulance took a 17-year-old passenger that was in the back to UTMC with serious injuries.
No one in the pick-up truck was hurt.
According to SPD, none of the car's occupants appeared to be wearing a seatbelt. Police said they found marijuana and alcohol near the car.
The crash remains under investigation.
