Crash on I-40 West before I-75 split cleared after backing up traffic for miles; I-40 East back open near Kingston after crash

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said two crashes were reported on I-40 at around the same time on Wednesday.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Two crashes were reported on I-40 Wednesday afternoon. The first crash was reported near Kingston and closed I-40 East.

That crash was reported at around 5:05 p.m. Eastern Time in Roane County, backing up traffic on I-40 East toward Emory Gap. A Tennessee Department of Transporation said it was reported near Mile Marker 351. By 6:40 p.m. the road was back open.

The second crash was reported near Watt Road on I-40 West, as drivers headed towards the I-75 and I-40 split. A tractor-trailer was involved in the crash and closed two of three westbound lanes. It was reported at around 5:13 p.m. Eastern Time. That crash backed up traffic for miles, towards Cedar Bluff.

It was cleared later Wednesday night, according to TDOT.
