Eastbound I-40 crash near Strawberry Plains Pike exit causes backups for miles

The crash blocked the shoulder of I-40 at mile marker 399. Drivers were moving slowly through the area as crews responded, causing backups into Knoxville.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Traffic was backed up for several miles on eastbound Interstate 40 after a crash near Strawberry Plains Pike in East Knox County.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, a crash was blocking the left shoulder of I-40 at mile marker 399. 

Traffic moved slowly past the crash as emergency crews responded,  causing long backups stretching into Knoxville. As of 4 p.m., traffic was backed up as far as the Rutledge Pike exit, which also caused backups on Interstate 640 to the Millertown Pike exit.
