KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Drivers were met with heavy congestion and backups on Interstate 40 and other major highways Friday afternoon as people tried to head out of Knoxville for the Memorial Day weekend.
Emergency crews responded to a crash on Alcoa Highway Friday afternoon near Maloney Road in South Knoxville around 5:00 p.m. A vehicle that flipped on its side was blocking the northbound side, backing traffic up past Governor John Sevier Highway.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation also reported a crash on I-40 West that had traffic backed up for miles from Cedar Bluff to West Hills.
According to TDOT, the crash happened a Bridgewater Road near Mile Marker 378 around 3:50 p.m., which is just before the Cedar Bluff Road exit. The wreck was later cleared from the interstate around 4:30 p.m., but traffic remained heavily congested and backed up to Papermill Drive in Knoxville.
