Hawkins County mower seriously hurt after head-on crash

Mayor DeWitte asked people to slow down and be careful on county backroads, saying it's difficult for people to see around curves.

HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. — A Hawkins County employee is recovering after suffering serious injuries in a head-on crash Thursday, according to Mayor Mark DeWitte.

The mayor said the employee was on a mowing tractor with a truck following it. He said the crews were using all safety precautions, including flashing lights and signs, when a driver came around a curve on the wrong side of the road and hit the tractor "pretty much head-on."

The employee driving the mower was seriously injured.

"Thankfully, it was a tractor with an enclosed cab and the employee survived, but has multiple injuries," DeWitte said. "Hawkins County has many backroads where it's difficult to see around an upcoming curve.  PLEASE!!!  Speeding or distracted driving needs to stop before there is a fatality that could have been prevented."
