Part of Cumberland Avenue near UT campus to close entirely for few days starting May 19; some lanes to close for most of summer

KUB said the road will be closed while crews upgrade the natural gas and water systems in the area.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Utilities Board said a section of Cumberland Avenue near the University of Tennessee campus will close for a few days while crews work to upgrade water and natural gas systems in the area.

KUB said Cumberland Avenue between 11th Street and 16th Street would be closed starting at 7 p.m. on May 19. KUB said the closure would be in place through 7 a.m. on May 22. The section of road runs past The Hill, a section of UT home to several academic buildings, leading to the Cumberland Strip.

The adjacent sidewalk on the north side of Cumberland Avenue will also be closed, and Cumberland Avenue will not be accessible from James Aghee Street and neither from 13th Street. Electronic signs will be placed alongside nearby roads to indicate detour routes, KUB said in a release.

After May 22, KUB said one lane would reopen on each side of Cumberland Avenue. Westbound and eastbound traffic would be down to one lane through Aug. 8, and the road would continue to be inaccessible from James Agee Street and 13th Street. The sidewalk would also remain closed through Aug. 8, KUB said.
