Lifestar responds after multi-vehicle crash on State Route 444 near Saddle Dam

Two men were airlifted after a serious crash on Monday.

TELLICO VILLAGE, Tenn. — A multi-vehicle crash near the Saddle Dam closed part of State Route 444 in Tellico Village on Monday morning, according to the Loudon County Sheriff's Office. 

A Lincoln MKZ sedan crossed over the center line and hit a GMC truck, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. 

The truck then completely rotated and a Chevy Malibu sedan hit it at an angle while the Lincoln sedan came went off the road and into a tree, THP said. 

The driver of the Lincoln, Virgil Russell, 59, of Loudon and the driver of the GMC truck, Lyle Smith, 60, of Loudon were both airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to THP.

A passenger in the vehicle with Russell was injured but was not airlifted, THP said. 

The driver of the Chevy Malibu, Hein Thomas, 34, of Kentucky, was not injured. All three drivers involved in the crash were wearing their seatbelts and charges are currently pending against Russell, according to THP.
