KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Many viewers across Knoxville reached out to WBIR about traffic issues they noticed on North Broadway. The road runs from near the downtown area north towards Fountain City.
The city said most of the traffic on North Broadway is due to a timing issue on the traffic lights, leading to a poor flow of traffic and issues turning on or off the road.
"It's a total mess, yes. We have to wait to get out onto Broadway just from our parking lot here," said Ruth Brown, who works at a store located along the road.
Leaders with the city said they have already made several updates on the road and routinely change equipment if it breaks or if they receive requests for it to be changed. They also said they will continue updating the road ahead of the start of a long-term project on North Broadway.
City leaders said they hope to upgrade around 30 intersections on the road with traffic lights that operate remotely, which would make fixes faster. They also said they plan to add video cameras along the road to make the road safer.
The city said North Broadway is one of their busiest roads, and the upgrades could make the flow of traffic better for all drivers on it.
