ALCOA, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation said the left lane of both northbound and southbound traffic was closed on Alcoa Highway Friday afternoon due to downed utility lines.

A spokesperson said the lines were down near John Sevier Highway, and TDOT showed traffic was backed up for miles in both directions. Northbound traffic was backed up to near South Singleton Station Road while southbound traffic was backed up past Montlake Drive near Marine Park.

TDOT reported two single-car crashes, both located near each other. The first was reported at around 1:59 p.m. near the turn onto John Sevier Highway. The other was reported slightly south of the first, near Topside Drive, and it was reported at around 2:06 p.m.

The Knoxville Utilities Board said they were working to repair the downed utility pole, and said traffic should avoid the area. They said the repairs were expected to last until the evening of Sept. 15.

Additional information about the crashes, such as the circumstances surrounding them and whether any injuries were reported was not immediately available. This story will be updated when more information is available.
