Northbound Alcoa Highway reopens after crash near UT Medical Center

TDOT said the crash happened near Cherokee Trail. Both sides of the highway were backed up as of 5 p.m.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A serious crash on Alcoa Highway backed up traffic for miles and closed the northbound side near the Tennessee River on Tuesday evening.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, emergency crews responded to a crash affecting the northbound and southbound sides of the highway near the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The crash closed the northbound side at Cherokee Trail, bringing traffic to a standstill and backing vehicles up for miles past Maloney Road. The northbound side reopened around 3:35 p.m. after crews cleared the wreckage.

Southbound traffic was also slow-going at the crash site, and cars began backing up onto Interstate 40 East at the Alcoa Highway exit.

As of 5:40 p.m., traffic was still backed up but moving again.
