KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Vols are getting ready to start the football season with a matchup against Chattanooga in Neyland Stadium on Aug. 31. While the team gets ready to play, fans across the U.S. are planning trips to the Knoxville area to cheer them on.
"In Knoxville, We've seen over an 80% surge in searches for accommodations for listings in town, as Vols fans head to town for the big game this Labor Day weekend," said Haven Thorn with Airbnb. "Guests are opting to stay in your national parks, in Knoxville specifically, which allows them to experience nature alongside all the big gameday excitement."
The Great Smoky Mountains are usually a popular getaway destination for crowds, but a bigger crowd can be expected this year. According to Airbnb, only around 25% of guests booking stays are from within the state.
"We're calling it loved by locals, and Labor Day is a great opportunity for folks who definitely want to get out of the house, but they don't want to get on a flight. They don't want to go far," said Thorn. "Football season is definitely our busiest time of the year."
The Vols' game against Chattanooga is expected to start at 12:45 p.m. on Aug. 31.
