‘I can’t think of anybody who would be more proud’ | Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy on motivation to play well for grandfather who passed away

The season opener meant more to McCoy than returning from his season-ending injury last season. He wanted to play well for his late grandfather.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy played his first game back on Saturday against Chattanooga since he suffered a season-ending ankle fracture dislocation last season.

McCoy, who was injured last year against South Carolina, had six receptions for 89 yards. He said that was a relief.

What meant more to him was playing this game for his grandfather, Tom Snyder, who passed away at the age of 81 from complications with cancer. This was the first game McCoy played since his grandfather passed away.

“I can’t think of anybody who would be more proud,” McCoy said when asked after the win what his grandfather would have said about his performance.

McCoy shared a special moment with him as he was on the road from recovery from his injury still wearing a walking boot.

“When I was flown home to see him in the hospital, I took my boot off and took my first steps out of my boot and he got out of his hospital bed,” he said. “That was a cool moment we had together. I give a lot of my credit and success to him because of how he instilled a lot of value in sports and how to be a man. I miss him a lot.”

McCoy held a charity golf tournament in Knoxville back in July to benefit Huddle for Hearts. He did it in tribute for his grandfather.

McCoy was the second-leading receiver and played a big part in UT’s 69-3 win. He looks to help lead the Vols to more success in their second game against NC State next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
