Ijams 'Family Owl Prowl' offers a chance to spot owls on trails after dark

Jan. 5 marks the first night of the program this year. Other dates are available through January and February.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Families have a chance to meet some friendly owls and try to spot more after dark on Ijams trails, all as part of an event the nature center is offering in January and February.

The "Family Owl Prowl" starts the night of Jan. 5, when families can meet owls and follow staff members through nature trails after dark to find more. Along the way, they will learn about unique adaptations that help owls hunt and survive. Participants will also practice owl calls while walking up to 2 miles.

Specifically, families will search for Barred Owls, Eastern Screech Owls and Great Horned Owls during the event. It starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8:30 p.m. at the Ijams Nature Center.

While tickets were sold out for the event on Jan. 5, families could also sign up for the events on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19. Family Owl Prowls are also scheduled for Feb. 2, Feb. 3 and Feb. 9. Tickets cost up to $16.
