SAMUEL MIKULAK

Age: 23

From: Newport Coast, California

Samuel Mikulak (mih-COOL-ick) has gymnastics in his blood. Both of his parents were collegiate gymnasts, and after becoming involved in gymnastics from an early age, he went on to become the first freshman in history to win the NCAA all-around title.

This is not Mikulk’s first Olympics; he competed with Team USA in 2012 London Games, and competed on five out of six apparatus in the preliminary rounds to help the team qualify for the finals. But due to several missteps, the U.S. men underperformed and came in fifth.

For the 2016 Rio Games, Mikulak has been called the American to beat, and he has eyes on defeating reigning Olympic champion (and six-time all-around world champion) Kohei Uchimura of Japan.

JACOB DALTON

Age: 24

From: Sparks, Nevada

Jacob Dalton began his gymnastics career when he was six years old.

He was part of the U.S. men’s team and competed in 2012 London Olympics, in which the men’s team finished fifth. But over his career, Dalton has won more than a dozen national championships from 2009 to 2016.

In 2015, Dalton had to undergo surgery for a shoulder injury and missed major 2015 competitions, but came back strong in 2016 qualifying competitions. He gave good performances in floor and vault routines to compete in the 2016 Olympics.

DANELL LEYVA

Age: 24

From: Cuba, based in Miami

Danell Leyva was introduced to gymnastics at an early age when his mom put on a VHS tape of the sport, and he was transfixed.

When he was just 2 years old, he defected to the U.S. with his mother and sister, and was coached by his stepfather.

Leyva has been a stand-out on the parallel and horizontal bar, and has been a national champion of the parallel bars four times.

Leyva went to the London Games in 2012 and competed in the both the team and all-around individual competitions. He fell off the Pommel horse in both events, but was able to work his way back up in the all-around and won bronze for at the London Games, the only medal won by a male gymnast in London.

For the 2016 Games in Rio, Leyva was initially was an alternate for Team USA until fellow teammate John Orozco suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon and had to bow out.

ALEX NADDOUR

Age: 25

From: Gilbert, Arizona

Alexander Naddour is known for his performances on the pommel horse, an apparatus where the U.S. men are usually weak.

Naddour competed for the University of Oklahoma for two years before leaving to train back home in Arizona. Since, he’s helped his teammates win bronze medals at the world championships in 2011 and 2014.

Naddour, a four-time national championship on the pommel horse, was an alternate for the 2012 team in London, where the men’s team finished fifth.

CHRIS BROOKS

Age: 29

From: Houston, Texas

Chris Brooks comes from a family of gymnasts – his father, sister and brother have all competed.

Early in his careers, Brooks competed for the University of Oklahoma from 2005 to 2009. After failing to earn a spot on the 2012 London Olympics Team, Brooks considered retiring. But, he continued competing and went on to win a trio of medals during the 2015 P&G Championship. He finished second place in the all-around at both the 2016 P&G Championships and Olympic Trials, and now makes his Olympics debut as Captain for Team USA for the 2016 Games in Rio.
